If you visited our Aquarium this past summer, you may have experienced difficulty finding a parking space and also some overcrowded conditions within our facility. The popular stories released about our little dolphin who lost her tail in a crab trap that have been in the media and with Scholastic’s distribution of the book “Winter’s Tail”, have caused people from around the world to come visit our facility to learn more about our mission and to meet Winter.
The vacant property to the east of the Aquarium has been for sale for several years. With the assistance and support of a Jacobson Foundation grant and another grant recently provided to the Aquarium by the City of Clearwater, we are excited to announce that we have entered into an agreement to purchase this property that will enable us to implement part of our long range strategy and make room for additional crowds that will be coming after the release of the movie, Dolphin Tale currently being filmed in Clearwater.
Our short term intention is to turn the vacant property into a surface parking lot to relieve congestion along the street. Another longer term benefit to owning this property is that it gives the potential control of the water basin to CMA so that it can be used for research and as a natural habitat to rehabilitate marine animals.
CMA also has an initiative to raise funds to make additional improvements to our existing facility to house more animals so that we may expand our mission of the rescue, rehabilitation and release of marine animals.
